Nature and history took their sweet time creating our one-of-a-kind landscape, sculpting the lake and its steep wooded slopes with a slow-moving glacier and gradually colonizing its shores with roads and towns, monasteries and grand villas. The lake’s complex geography has made historic preservation a must, keeping the charms of its past intact and inspiring travelers from across the globe to come and admire its beauty or make Lake Como their home. Decade after decade, a new adoring public; time and again this place immortalized by poets and painters, composers and cinematographers. A true Meraviglia, Lake Como still has the power to astonish even the most veteran traveler.

Meraviglia

From Latin mirabilis (“astonishing”)

A vivid and sudden feeling of admiration, of surprise, which is felt on seeing, hearing, knowing something that is or appears to be new, extraordinary, strange or otherwise unexpected: a wonder to behold.

Moltrasio

Moltrasio spills down from the slopes of Mount Bisbino to the water’s northern shore in a jumble of elegant residences, humble cottages and ancient roads that have miraculously stood the test of time – every bit as stunning as the “vertical towns” of Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre. Aqua e pietra, the locals say, have made Moltrasio what it is today. Aqua, as in the lovely lake in every picture-postcard view and the mountain streams that create picturesque waterfalls and hydropower for the flour mills or olive oil presses of the past. Pietra, as in pietra moltrasina, that you find in everything from the well-trodden Scala Santa path along our eastern wall to the ornate artistic flourishes of villas like our own. Two elements that are resilient, hard-working and capable of great beauty.
