Why Lake Como Is the Ultimate Quiet Luxury Destination:
A Season-by-Season Guide to Lake Como

Sculpted by the glaciers of yesteryear, Lake Como has been the playground of pleasure-seekers for centuries. In this season-by-season guide, we explore why our native Lario has become the ultimate quiet luxury destination—and how the shift from spectacle to a more soulful approach is changing hospitality for travelers and hoteliers alike. Our own Passalacqua, crowned the World’s Best Hotel in 2023, embodies this brave new world with its intimate scale and warm Italian welcome. Whether in spring, summer or even autumn, Passalacqua offers an elegant retreat with a strong sense of belonging and place.

Spring on Lake Como: A reawakening of nature and hospitality

Lake Como boasts the perfect mix of natural beauty and human ingenuity. Its steep wooded slopes cascade into a deep blue expanse that sparkles like diamonds when the sun hits just so. No wonder the nobility—and later titans of industry and the glitterati—have flocked to its shores to retreat in grand summer homes and opulent hotels like the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, our sister property across the water. With them came celebrated architects, artisans and garden designers intent on creating worlds of wonder that allow the eye to dance from the colorful terrazzo floors to the fanciful ceiling frescos, from the creeping thyme on the stairs to the soaring tulip trees.

Luxury has always played in a different key on Lake Como, harking back to the lost art of villeggiatura. This age-old tradition invites you to leave your everyday realities behind and enjoy life’s simpler pleasures in a country manor or a lakeside estate like ours. Less doing, more being—as hustle melts into sweet, sweet idleness. Travelers looking for a luxury destination today choose Lake Como not for glitz and glamor, but for God-given splendor elevated with man-made comforts designed to delight all five senses.

Spring is a celebration of both, when we fling off the dust sheets and roll out the red carpet again, when Mother Nature bursts forth with the shoots and blooms she has been tending lovingly all winter. There is an optimism in the air as eager hearts and hands prepare for the first guests to arrive. Each season has its particular charms—choosing just one is like choosing a favorite child!—but spring on Lake Como has much to recommend it.

While summer is alive with buzz and activity, spring offers something rarer: the lake in blissful solitude, nature in full bloom and a gentle warmth that invites you to linger. Conditions are perfect for a hike along the Greenway, even at midday, yet it’s cool enough in the evenings to cozy up in the library with a gripping novel and a stiff drink. You may even experience nature’s fury in one of our epic but brief spring storms that churn the lake’s surface into shards of glass.

Summer on Lake Como: Quiet luxury in full bloom

Summer is when Lake Como really comes alive—and that does not go unnoticed by the world’s travelers. Can we still call Lake Como an exclusive destination, even at the height of summer? Unquestionably. It’s all about curating your stay with the season in mind. Exclusive in the summer season is not knocking elbows with the masses on Bellagio’s cobbled streets. It’s about feeding your soul, more me-time than look-at-me-time.

Passalacqua lives in exactly this paradigm, an exclusive yet very personal property. A true home away from home, where you can be the best version of you. This is what some call ‘quiet luxury’, a lifestyle aesthetic that tilts less toward the conspicuous, championing quality instead: real interpersonal relationships, experiences rather than things, artisanal excellence and traditions that travel through the generations.

Understated luxury transcends magnums of champagne and global branding. It’s specific. It has a personality. It is in, but more importantly, of  its place. What drives this trend? On one side, we have perceptive (often women) hoteliers like our own Valentina De Santis with a strong vision and a knack for tuning into guests’ lived experiences. On the other side are savvy travelers eager for meaningful moments in a world drowning in excess. In the Passalacqua summer, our daily activities run the gamut: from making pastries with our resident pastry chef or cooling off underground on a tour of our ancient tunnels. Swapping stories with staff and going deep on treasured traditions—the best kind of hyperlocal experience.

Summer on Lake Como is all about the water, whether you’re under our peekaboo parasols by the pool or venturing out on the lake. At Passalacqua’s private pier, your private launch awaits, with a seasoned boatman like our Beppe at the helm, who has spent his whole life exploring this 100-mile shoreline. There is that connection to people and place again—our signature move—which deepens your experience. Bonus: it also guarantees you find the perfect spot for a secret swim or a sunset photo op. Then there are the heritage chickens, sweets in giant apothecary jars and cinema in the garden with black-and-white films showing on a sheet between the trees. Luxury, yes—only different.

Autumn on Lake Como: The joys of off-peak travel

When the frenetic pace of summer slows, Lake Como belongs once again to the comaschi. This is a season of quieter pursuits, pressing olives, harvesting chestnuts and squash, wandering through weekend food festivals. The privileges of visiting Lake Como outside peak season are many—the cobbled village streets all to yourself, russet and gold foliage lighting up the hills and a packed cultural calendar. We don’t believe there is ever a wrong time to visit Lake Como, but autumn makes a compelling case.

With the tourist traps shuttered outside the peak season, the cultural and gastronomic activities on offer cater more for locals. That opens up opportunities for the authentic experiences and cross-cultural encounters that make a journey more immersive and meaningful. Savoring the fruits of the harvest—chestnuts and truffles and mushrooms, oh my!—at a sagra, one of the many autumn food fairs. Rubbing shoulders with Como’s high society during intermission at Teatro Sociale (a must now that Passalacqua has its own box!). Strolling through the vineyards in Valtellina’s ‘tall and fearsome mountains,’ as Leonardo da Vinci called them, to taste the powerful Sforzato reds.

The true beauty of autumnal travel, particularly when you stay at Passalacqua, is never having to do anything at all. Autumn is ideal for dolce far niente, cooler temps and low-hanging clouds providing the perfect cover for lazy days. You might linger over breakfast until it becomes lunch, soak up the sun indoors in our Winter Garden or move up the cocktail hour simply because you can—time, after all, is a social construct. The Spa at Passalacqua is the ultimate indulgence: Enjoy old-world charm paired with state-of-the-art wellness in a Seed to Skin ritual. Sweat it out in the steam room or sauna nestled in our low-lit subterranean stone vaults. Glide away your cares in the panoramic indoor pool—heated to an almost amniotic 89 degrees Fahrenheit.

Among Italy’s great lakes, Como strikes the right balance—neither as vast as Garda nor as compact as Orta or Iseo. Its Y-shaped shores offer variety without exhaustion, drama without overwhelm. And with Milan’s airports just an hour away, that first glimpse of blue comes sooner than you’d imagine. In-the-know travelers can experience Lake Como as an exclusive destination at any time of year, taking advantage of off-peak access to sought-after suites like ours at Passalacqua, or the freedom to linger longer in other room categories without a premium. Whatever the season, Lake Como—and Passalacqua—deliver what true luxury has always promised: beauty that stills the mind, connections that restore the spirit and time that feels like it’s yours alone.
