Lake Como Beyond Summer: Why the Off-Season Is the New Luxury

Picture this: The November sun has finally made its way over the jagged spine of Monte Boletto, banishing the morning mist from the lake’s indigo waters. And as you stroll along the shore, you feel like the sole witness to it all. That, dear reader, is the luxury of the off-season on Lake Como. All this majesty, all to yourself. At Passalacqua, the season unfolds in two acts: a cozy, contemplative autumn, where the days are slow, surprisingly mild and steeped in romance; and a winter wonderland, where age-old traditions are new again, and families and friends gather for the festivities in true Passalacqua style.

Here’s what makes the off-season a seductive time to visit Lake Como:

Why autumn is gold in more ways than one
Why winter is the lake’s best-kept secret
How to give your Christmas and New Year’s celebrations a festive glow-up

Is Lake Como worth visiting in autumn?

Yes, a thousand times yes. When the days are mild, the nights are crisp and the hills of russet-and-gold trees are bathed in pale sunlight, it’s the ideal time for authentic Lake Como experiences you only find in fall—and that goes for the dolce far niente crowd as well as their dolce far qualcosa counterparts. For the former, there are armchairs in the library, leaf-strewn trails to crunch your way along and a subterranean thermal suite made for whiling away the hours. The latter can take in the sights without the crowds, taste their way through local food festivals and fill their days with cooking classes, vintage car rides and shopping trips to Milan, to name just a few of our experiences.

Whatever you choose, Chef Viviana Varese and her team will be waiting with a culinary coda to each perfect day. Think menus starring seasonal delicacies, traditional Lombard feasts or a Thanksgiving extravaganza that gives North American classics a creative Italian twist. And for a family celebration or Friendsgiving to remember, our private lakeside retreat Casa al Lago can be yours with up to four bedrooms for exclusive use.

What is Lake Como like in winter?

Quiet, crisp and utterly enchanting. It feels more like Italy and less like a generic destination—as if this place belongs to the Comaschi once again. That means visitors can live like the locals and join them in their preferred pursuits, whether it’s strolling through sleepy lakeside villages, feasting on polenta and other hearty winter fare, or catching a show at the Teatro Sociale di Como. Our guests have exclusive access to the De Santis family box at this elegant 19th-century theater, where they can rub shoulders with other culture connoisseurs at piano recitals, a musical production of A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker ballet. Art lovers can also escape the cold at the Casabianca house-museum, where light lunches and afternoon teas pair perfectly with the De Santis family’s private collection of contemporary art.

While many of the lake’s grand hotels close their doors for the season, Passalacqua stays open through January 3. And once you’re here, there’s no need to ever leave the property. That’s the beauty of villeggiatura, the centuries-old Italian art of the leisurely, full-immersion stay. Our Every Day is a Gift program offers myriad activities, from daily Cozy Winter Yoga sessions and guided walks through the villa’s history to workshops in holiday baking, cocktail-making and seasonal garlands. Our Merende d’Inverno turn snack time into a celebration made for the coldest afternoons, featuring the chef’s inventive take on hot chocolate, home-baked Christmas pastries and chestnuts and marshmallows roasted on an open fire. And our For You team has all the insider knowledge on excursions, restaurants, gardens and museums that best represent the area.

Christmas and New Year’s on Lake Como

Lake Como does not do things by halves, least of all the end-of-year festivities. There are Christmas markets to browse while you sip vin brûlé and snack on miascia fruit cake—chief among them Como’s fairytale Città dei Balocchi. Then there are the presepi, those intricate nativity scenes beloved by Italians, on display everywhere from the “Notte dei Presepi” at Villa del Balbianello to Torno’s so-called Borgo dei Presepi, where you can wander through the village and discover some 100 nativity scenes made by locals from items as varied as spark plugs and musical instruments. But why stop at tabletop presepi when the whole lake becomes a life-sized nativity during the Lake Como Christmas Light festival? Our guests have a front-row seat to the festive lights all along the shore—and their romantic reflections on the dark water—on a private twilight cruise aboard one of our vintage boats.

Passalacqua is pulling out all the stops for this year’s holiday season as well. The pool area will be transformed into our very own winter wonderland—think skating on a lake-view ice rink and sipping mulled wine in open-air lounges with plush throws and crackling fire pits. Steps away, JJ Martin works her magic in the Winter Garden, revealing a giant Christmas kaleidoscope with decorative lanterns, polychrome window decals and a Christmas tree trimmed with bespoke, Passalacqua-inspired decorations. Chef Viviana Varese and her team have some surprises up their toques for our holiday banquets, from elaborate seafood platters on Christmas Eve to Christmas lunch accompanied by a children’s choir singing carols and a traditional midnight snack of cotechino sausage and lentils on New Year’s Eve.

Blissfully so. Instead of the usual anti-climax of shouting the countdown in a crowded room, imagine watching fireworks explode over the lake, a glass of bubbly in hand, with the people you love most—perhaps in the privacy of Casa al Lago. This is exactly the kind of luxury that is within reach during the off-season. More meaning, less noise. The space and time to be rather than just to do when you have this magical place all to yourself. So, whether you come for the golden days of autumn or the sparkle of winter, Passalacqua will be waiting, with the fire already lit.
